Some restaurants like to set their stall out early. The Potted Pig’s website tells you that,
“We love cooking, eating and gin…we serve food that we’d love to eat when we go out.”
Downstairs from its entrance on Cardiff’s High St, you’ll find The Potted Pig located in a former bank vault. It’s an unusual setting for a restaurant, the ideal antidote to identikit city centre chain venues, and the subtle lighting makes it feel like a well-kept secret, an escape from the capital’s pace.
The long-serving team clearly prizes that classical French tradition of lesser known, less glamorous cuts (‘nose to tail’), and the menu here is more about appetite than fashion: food with an emotional connection, the sort of cooking which may evoke memories of family meals. They make a laudable commitment to reduce their carbon footprint too, with meat farmed within 20 miles and the kitchen building strong relationships with nearby suppliers.
As you might expect by now it is unapologetically hearty stuff. Because the choices change often- daily, sometimes, since what is in season and what is good right now drive the menu- you will likely see different dishes when you visit.
But let’s try to give you some idea of what you’ll find. When you think of big, generous cooking, what do you look forward to?
A tangy, oozing Welsh rarebit? Pork belly? Crisp confit lamb breast? Croquettes stuffed with brisket slow cooked in beer? There may well be a pig’s head terrine, or cockles laverbread and bacon on thick toast (you may want to save room for the ‘brisket chips’, crisp, light and drenched with ox cheek in a rich, glossy gravy) and of course non meat-eaters aren’t forgotten.
Sweet tooth? Sticky toffee pudding, lemon posset and white chocolate cheesecake might beckon you in. Their Sunday lunches are highly regarded locally, and with 30 gins to choose from, why not settle in for a leisurely couple of hours?
Their set-price lunch menu is just £14.50 for two courses and £19 for three. You can add a glass of wine for another £3. (The à la carte menu is also available at lunchtime).
