Somehow, it is fitting that Ultracomida is within sight of both the Pier and Old College: this is another Aberystwyth institution, after all. Now in its Pier Street home, this bar, deli and ‘vinoteca’ is where it all started. Since husband and wife Paul and Shumana opened in 2001, this has grown into a group with restaurants, bars and wine warehouses.
You can sit outside in summer but whatever the weather, you’ll find so much to enjoy here. Shop for imported groceries, order something to take away, or relax with a glass or two.
Good to know
Ultracomida in Aberystwyth is recognisably from the same family as Narberth but there is a simplified menu, more suited to wine bar counter eating than its sibling’s communal dining room.
You can spend ages exploring an impressive range of Spanish olives, meats, cheeses, oils and more. Pop in for a couple of slices of their huge daily tortilla- though when it’s gone it’s gone, so don’t say we didn’t warn you- or some takeaway filled barras, a Galician tradition with a choice of fillings if you’re heading out for the day.
But we’d recommend relaxing in the bar, in the light which floods in from the glass ceiling. Pull up a stool and enjoy a short menu of Spanish classics, from tangy slices of mojama (air-dried tuna) and jamón to turrón and churros.
You’ll inevitably find yourself admiring the many reds, whites, sherries and cavas, and of course the vermut they love so much they named their Cardiff ‘hole in the wall’ bar after it. Order a flight.
There’s a huge ‘by the glass’ range, representing every Spanish wine region from Galicia and Asturias to Rioja, Castilla y León and many more.
And as a bonus- why not take the short trip to Spanish Wines Direct nearby?
Here is the heart of the whole Ultracomida wholesale operation, happily open to the public so you can browse one of the UK’s biggest Spanish selections, with 500 lines available.
Pictures of their suppliers are on show. Those personal links with growers are important to them, you sense. Why not buy a tasting card and work your way through some wines while you are here? There’s expert advice on hand if you’re unsure what you’re looking for, or the chance to try something brand new. It’s an unmissable opportunity to explore a range of Spanish wines with few equals.
