Cwtchitas- a neat, Hispanic play on the Welsh word for ‘hugs’- specialise in Mexican flavours. You might find their soft tacos filled with pork belly, or their chorizo, potato and thyme cheese bombs, or perhaps their pulled pork rolls or their beef barbacoa tacos. These are the ‘little hugs’ of their name: Jordan and Sara’s taqueria delivers a lot of flavour in cute little portions.
Prefer something without meat? Their Padrón pepper and pineapple tacos, with vegan ‘flipflop’ sauce and a spiced nut crumb (gluten free, too) have been very popular this autumn and winter season: add their new esquites (billed as a ‘Mexican Mac and cheese’) and you can see why their meat free options have attracted such positive reviews, because opting for those means they don’t feel short changed or an afterthought.
It’s choosing between the dishes which is the hard bit, especially with Cwtchitas’ trademark ‘twists’: blue corn tortillas, pink pickled onions…they like to keep you guessing. It’s a frequently rotating menu, cleverly angled toward bringing you back to check out what’s new. After a successful stint popping up at Sticky Fingers, they are back on the road from their Swansea base and will always be worth investigating. Next? A run of supper clubs: watch this space. You sense this is just the start of their journey.
